New director of Environment and Safety

After 20 years, Marcel van Raaij, Director Environment and Safety, left RIVM on 1 October 2014 and was succeeded by Els van Schie.

Marcel van Raaij has held various positions at RIVM. Before he became director of Environment and Safety in 2011, he was the interim director Nutrition, Medicines and Consumer Safety. Prior to that he was head of Chemical Substances and Integrated Risk Assessment, and head of Toxicology and Risk Assessment where he was active internationally. He obtained his PhD degree in Medical Biology from Leiden University.

On 1 October, Marcel van Raaij took up the position of Director of Medicines and Medical Technology in the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport.

In December 2014, Dr Els van Schie was appointed Director of Environment and Safety. Els van Schie has held several management positions in the Inspectorate for Human Environment and Transport, an independent agency of the Ministry of Infrastructure and the Environment (formerly Ministry of Transport, Public Works and Water Management). These positions included Interim Director of Strategy and Knowledge, and Director of Enforcement Policy and Interim Director-General of the Inspectorate for Human Environment and Transport.

Els van Schie took up the position of Director of Environment and Safety at RIVM on 1 February 2015.
