WHO Collaborating Centre for Antimicrobial Resistance

In 2014, RIVM was appointed WHO Collaborating Centre for Antimicrobial Resistance Epidemiology and Surveillance (WHO-CC AMR). RIVM is proud of this status given by WHO. As Collaborating Centre, we will continue to support WHO in the implementation of Global Action Plan against antimicrobial resistance and the European strategic action plan on AMR.

The Collaborating Centre actively contributes to the development of standards and best practices for national, regional, and global surveillance of antimicrobial resistance. In particular, WHO-CC AMR supports the establishment and strengthening of national surveillance networks in the European member states of WHO with technical support and advice on surveillance methodology, and data analysis and interpretation.

Surveillance key to controlling antibiotic resistance

Antimicrobial resistance is a major global challenge in the control of infectious diseases. Increasingly more bacteria are becoming resistant to antibiotics because of their excessive and inappropriate use. Surveillance can enable tracking of the emergence and threat of antimicrobial resistance so that focused interventions can be developed. Surveillance is an integral component of the global and European action plans to combat antibiotic resistance.

International expertise in RIVM

In 1999, the European Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance System (EARSS) was established, coordinated by RIVM. The insights gained into trends identified by means of the surveillance system have contributed to awareness of this threat so that professionals and policy makers can focus on combating antibiotic resistance. In 2010, the EARSS network was transferred to the ECDC, and now operates under the name EARS-net, a sustainable AMR surveillance network in the EU.

The WHO Collaborating Centre for Antimicrobial Resistance Epidemiology and Surveillance is the eighth WHO Collaborating Centre hosted by RIVM.
